England (E) and Wales (W)
There are currently eight permanent bank holidays in England and Wales and an additional one to celebrate the Royal Wedding in 2011 and to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012:
Scotland (S)
There are nine bank holidays across Scotland. There are also a number of other local or public holidays which can be decided by local authorities and are based on local tradition.
Since 2007, St Andrew's Day has been an alternative, voluntary public holiday, which can replace an existing local holiday.
The Scottish government has also announced that there will be an additional bank holiday on 29 April 2011 for the Royal Wedding.
Businesses and schools are not necessarily closed on Scottish bank holidays. The Scottish banks follow the English and Wales bank holidays for business reasons.
Northern Ireland (I)
In Northern Ireland, there are ten permanent bank holidays. These are the same eight as in England and Wales, plus St Patrick's Day on 17 March each year and the Anniversary of the Battle of the Boyne in 1690, also known as Orangemen’s Day.
* When the usual date of a bank or public holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, a 'substitute day' is given, normally the following Monday.
